Neighbourhood:

Picturesquely situated on a tufa terrace overlooking the Gulf of Naples, Sorrento is the most famous town on the Sorrento coastline. Known as a holiday resort since ancient times, Sorrento fascinates tourists and visitors with its breathtaking views, the landscape of gardens and citrus groves, the marinas, the picturesque old town, an interesting historical and religious architecture, the ancient tradition of inlaid woodwork and lace. Some of the wonders that you must visit when in Sorrento are:

1) The Vallone dei Mulini is a place of great naturalistic suggestion in Sorrento. The formation of this deep cleft in the rock dates back to about 35,000 years ago.

2) The Correale Museum is “Italy’s most beautiful provincial museum”, with its interesting collection of minor arts from the 17th and 18th centuries.

3) Church of San Francesco: a few metres from the Villa Comunale, stands the convent complex of San Francesco d’Assisi, consisting of the church, cloister and monastery. In the 14th century, the Franciscan friars built a church on the site of the ancient oratory founded by Sant’Antonino, which was later modified in the Baroque style.

4) Piazza Tasso: crossed by the lively Corso Italia, Piazza Tasso is the main square in Sorrento, the heart of city life, emblem of an internationally renowned tourist destination.

5) Basilica of Sant’Antonio: Sant’Antonino is the “Patron Saint, Advocate and Father” of Sorrento and the peninsula. The basilica in the square of the same name is dedicated to the Saint who protects the city from calamities and epidemics and to whom numerous miracles are attributed.

6) Duomo: Rebuilt in the 15th century in the Romanesque style on the site of an ancient place of worship, the cathedral dedicated to Saints Philip and James has undergone several restorations that have completely changed its appearance, until the facade was rebuilt in 1924.

7) Sedile Dominova: Built in the 14th century as Domus Novae (hence Dominova), the small square building in the historic centre of Sorrento is the only example in Campania of the ancient sedile nobiliari, the medieval institutions responsible for administering public affairs.

8) Marina Grande and Marina Piccola: a picturesque seaside village accessed by following a small stone stairway and crossing the ancient Porta Greca, Marina Grande retains the charm of the fishing village it once was with its colourful houses, boats and nets pulled onto the shore.
