Neighbourhood:

San Giovanni, officially known as Appio Latino, is one of the most densely populated and historic districts of Rome, which is home to some of the most important historical and cultural sights. The district expresses a unique authenticity due to its contrast between modern architecture and ancient ruins. The Renaissance buildings on the famous sampietrini streets blend perfectly with the modern avenues leading to perfectly decorated cathedrals. Here in San Giovanni the battle is fought every day, the battle between history and the present. That’s why the neighbourhood is an ideal base for discovering Rome’s eternal charm, traditions, culture and food, from strolls in the green to shopping sprees.
Dating back to the fourth century AD, the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is the oldest church in the world, one of the four papal basilicas in Rome and considered the most important basilica in the western world. Also known as ‘the mother of all churches’, it stands in the square of the same name in which there is the world’s tallest monolithic obelisk, is part of a large monumental complex that includes the Lateran Palace (the former papal seat) and is the main attraction of the district, a must-see for all pilgrims and lovers of sacred art who come to the capital each year.
A few steps away from the Basilica, stands the Sanctuary of the Scala Santa, a centuries-old pilgrimage destination that houses the Scala Santa, consisting of 28 steps, which, according to tradition, were walked by Jesus to go to Pontius Pilate.
Another destination not to be missed is the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the ancient residence of Saint Helena, famous throughout the Catholic world for guarding the Relics of the Passion of Christ, found on Mount Calvary.
